Jekyll is a doctor of medicine who treats the poor in his free clinic.
The rest of the time he is in his laboratory experimenting. He believes
that two sides are within man. He tries to proof this by turning himself
into the dark and evil person of Edward Hyde. This is when he starts
his double life.
