While the video is not perfect...not much are from that time period I'm afraid...it does give you a nice idea of the American way of looking at such.
Doctor Who was imported onto American TV screens and failed miserably because the writers couldn't capture the essence of Doctor Who...which is that he's British and has the sensibilities that go with that carcicature.
Had they done their own version, say Time Traveler or some such thing and made it American based and textured, it might very well have succeeded...depending on the actors, the direction, the script and so on.
